Brazil Makes Contribution to Fund WIPO Projects in Developing Countries

The Government of Brazil has made a voluntary contribution of BRL1,500,000 (approx. 244,000 Swiss Francs) for WIPO-administered capacity building activities to support the growth of IP use by innovators and creators use across Latin America, the Caribbean and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.

Brazil’s direct donation is made through a “funds-in-trust” arrangement, which are separate to WIPO’s regular budget and are used to support particular work areas.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang and and President Júlio César Castelo Branco Reis Moreira of Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) signed an agreement establishing the framework for enhanced support for IP capacity building.

Mr. Tang welcomed the contribution, noting "This generous contribution from Brazil demonstrates its leadership in supporting South-South cooperation through WIPO's programs. This will directly benefit innovators, creators and entrepreneurs across these regions.” He added: “This contribution builds upon Brazil's active and longstanding engagement with WIPO.”

Ambassador Guilherme de Aguiar Patriota emphasized Brazil's long-standing commitment to international development cooperation: "Brazil firmly believes that innovation can be a  driver of sustainable development. This new trilateral South-South technical cooperation agreement reflects our country’s dedication, in partnership with WIPO, to make the intellectual property system serve the needs of developing nations. We intend to use this new instrument of cooperation to make intellectual property deliver for populations that have not been the regular beneficiaries of the IP system, in line with WIPO’s Development Agenda."

The funding will be deployed over the next four years. WIPO will work closely with national IP offices, regional organizations and local partners to ensure maximum impact and sustainability of the supported programs. (Source from China daily）
